The police are responsible for mountain rescue, which involves searching for missing people and rescuing those who need urgent help.

Mountain volunteers equipped by the police

The mountain rescue service consists mainly of experienced volunteers who are trained and equipped by the police.

The rescue leader in the mountain rescue service is the district police chief or his/her designee. If the rescue operation involves several police districts, the regional chief of police or his/her designee is the rescue leader. Mountain rescuers are available in Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Jämtland and Dalarna.

Co-operating with others

Mountain rescuers cooperates with several authorities and organisations, such as the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the Mountain Safety Council, the county administrative board, the rescue service, various tourist organisations and the ski lift industry association.
