Svenska kraftnät

Individual companies cannot guarantee electricity supply in the event of serious disruptions. This is why power companies co-operate with each other and with Svenska kraftnät, which is in charge of national electricity emergency response.

When parts of the country's electricity system are damaged, whether caused by a storm, a snowstorm or a serious technical fault, it is the owner of the plant who is responsible for restoring the electricity supply.

Ensuring that the electricity supply is strengthened

In the event of extensive damage, such as after storms Gudrun and Per, it can be difficult for the individual power companies to oversee the situation. That is why the power companies have formed an organisation to cooperate with each other and be able to use common resources.

Svenska kraftnät is the electricity emergency response authority in Sweden and is responsible for strengthening the country's electricity supply to cope with critical situations and severe disruptions.

Extra resources can be used in crises

Svenska kraftnät's resources, both expertise and equipment, can be used in crises in the electricity industry and in the rest of society if they are suitable and available. This applies, for example, to tracked vehicles and communications support, but also to voluntary resources such as tracked vehicle drivers and power line surveillance by air. The Swedish Armed Forces' resources for rapid transport can also be used in the event of serious disruptions to the electricity supply. The need for assistance is then coordinated by Svenska kraftnät.

Svenska kraftnät decides whether the requested resources can be deployed, taking into account preparedness, resources, competition laws, etc.

Dam safety

Svenska kraftnät also has central tasks in the area of dam safety. For example, it is Svenska kraftnät's task to monitor developments in the field, work to limit damage caused by high flows and draw attention to the need for research.
