Severe storms

Severe storms sometimes hit Sweden and can lead to power cuts, traffic disruption and telecommunications outages, among other things. Here is information on how to prepare for storms.
Published

Before the storm

  • Prepare for power cuts. A prolonged power cut can affect your access to water, heating, food and communications, see below.

  • Bring in or tie down loose items on patios and balconies, such as trampolines, garden furniture, tools and other items that could blow away.

  • Retract awnings.

  • Make sure computers, tablets, cell phones and powerbanks (portable chargers) are charged when a storm warning is issued.

Helpful items to have at home

  • Gas stove with fuel or another alternative heat source.

  • Battery-powered radio or hand crank radio, alternatively car radio, to access important information via Swedish Radio P4.

  • Candles, tea lights, lighters, torches and batteries. Regularly check that the batteries in, for example, torches, clock radios and alarm systems are working.

  • Powerbank (portable charger) for computers, tablets and mobile phones. Make sure it is charged if, for example, a storm warning is issued.

  • Fresh water and food that does not require cooking.

During the storm

  • Stay indoors. There is a risk that you could be injured by falling trees or branches carried by strong winds.
  • Make sure that windows and doors are properly closed.
  • Do not go near power lines that have fallen to the ground, they can be dangerous.
  • Avoid the car if you have to go out. Storms can cause disruption to traffic and there is also a risk of trees and lamp posts falling on the road.
  • Follow SMHI's weather forecasts and weather warnings.
  • Listen to Swedish Radio P4 to follow what is happening.
