Volcanic eruption in Iceland
A major volcanic eruption has occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland. The eruption followed a strong earthquake north of the town of Grindavik at around 9pm on Monday evening. The eruption does not present a threat to life.

The eruption occurred near Sundhnúkagígar, about four kilometers northeast of Grindavík, according to the Icelandic Met Office. The town of Grindavik has already been evacuated and the area near the eruption is cordoned off.
At present, the eruption is not disrupting air traffic.
