Damaged ship being towed

A damaged ship loaded with ammonium nitrate is being towed towards Klaipedia in Lithuania. On the afternoon of Friday 20 September, the ship was on the south coast of Norway.

Ammonium nitrate is a substance that is classified as dangerous goods and can become explosive under certain circumstances. The Coast Guard's assessment is that the risk of exploitation should be considered low.

Shipments of ammonium nitrate are common and take place daily to and from Swedish ports. Since the ship is damaged, and loaded with a large amount, Swedish authorities have identified risks with the transport and ensure good preparedness and handling if the ship calls at Swedish waters.
